FleetCenter, Boston's sports and entertainment arena, is a highly visible landmark
for motorists and boaters entering the city. In close collaboration with New Boston
Garden Corporation and Ellerbe Beckett Architects, the goal was to seamlessly
integrate the arena's environmental graphics and its architectural and interior
design.
The
challenge was to develop a comprehensive signage system that would smoothly route
as many as 20,000 visitors - all converging within a narrow window of time - throughout
the building and, ultimately to their assigned seating. Exterior signs were designed
to identify the building itself as well as the ticket windows, plus public and
service entrances. Once inside the building, visitors are guided by graphics that
identify the concourse, stairways, arena, ticket windows and concessions. Signs
also identify back-of-house areas for the featured athletes and performers, as
well as the FleetCenter staff. Fleet
Bank obtained the naming rights for the state-of-the-art complex. The goal was
to work with the Bank to establish a brand name and to incorporate the new identity
into the arena. | |
